Jane's and Mitch's Japan 2007 Trip

In this section ...

During her last two years in Japan in the 1980s, Jane taught English to Japanese children, teenagers, and adults through Matty's School of English in Yokosuka. Mitsuo (husband) founded the school and developed the method of teaching English used by the instructors, while Noriko (wife) has been the director of the school from day one. They have two adult sons and three grandchildren, and Mitsuo is also an accomplished fly fisherman. It was a real treat for Jane to see them again after 22 years!

The DaiButsu was cast in 1252 and originally located inside a large temple hall. However, the temple buildings were washed away by a tsunami tidal wave at the end of the 15th century; only the temple foundation and the Buddah were left standing. Since that time, the Buddha has stood in the open air.
