Over a two year period in the early 2000s, Jane gave weekly English lessons to a Japanese couple (Hiro and Miki) who had just been blessed with the birth of their first child (Rachel). The husband was transferred from Fairfax back to Japan in 2003. Just before we left for Japan, Jane sent them an email and while we were on our trip she was thrilled to receive a reply back from them (guess Mitch can't keep grousing about Jane spending so much time checking her email while we were in Japan!) Much to our delight, we discovered that they now live just outside Tokyo, only about 15 minutes by train from where we were staying! We arranged to meet them on the last Saturday that we were in Japan and had a wonderful time with them. In addition, it was Hiro who first told us about a Japanese restaurant named Mikaku which had opened in Herndon, Virgina, and for many years Mikaku was our favorite (and only!) Japanese restaurant where we eat at regularly.

Rachel was only two years old when her family moved back to Japan, so at first she didn't remember Jane. However, soon enough she was holding Jane's hand and putting her arm around her, which thrilled Jane to no end!
Here are the three ladies in the Raumen Museum Gift Shop (what's a museum without a gift shop?)
