Since we began and ended our trip with Narita City (in terms of accomodations), and since Narita City isn't technically part of either Tohoku, Hokkaido, or Tokyo, we decided to present it separately here. Narita City has two main attractions:
-- Narita Airport
-- Naritasan (a popular Buddist temple)
and is about 60-70 minutes east of Tokyo by train. Since our ryokan in Narita City was only a ten minute train ride from the airport, and we didn't get out of Narita Airport until about 5:30PM JST, Narita City was a very convenient place to crash after the 13 & 1/2 hour airplane ride!

Here is Jane along with one of the staff of Ohgiya Ryokan. She was very helpful in assisting us with the purchase of gifts as well as sending our big suitcase on to a future destination via a package delivery service.
