Since we began and ended our trip with Narita City (in terms of accomodations), and since Narita City isn't technically part of either Tohoku, Hokkaido, or Tokyo, we decided to present it separately here. Narita City has two main attractions:
-- Narita Airport
-- Naritasan (a popular Buddist temple)
and is about 60-70 minutes east of Tokyo by train. Since our ryokan in Narita City was only a ten minute train ride from the airport, and we didn't get out of Narita Airport until about 5:30PM JST, Narita City was a very convenient place to crash after the 13 & 1/2 hour airplane ride!

Here is where we ate our first meal (dinner on May 15) in Japan, in a restaurant located in our ryokan. We shared chicken teriyaki and vegetable tempura. After a day's worth of meals on the airplane, it was great having some real food for a change!
The device in the middle of the picture hanging from the ceiling would be used to hang a pot over an open fire.
