Since we began and ended our trip with Narita City (in terms of accomodations), and since Narita City isn't technically part of either Tohoku, Hokkaido, or Tokyo, we decided to present it separately here. Narita City has two main attractions:
-- Narita Airport
-- Naritasan (a popular Buddist temple)
and is about 60-70 minutes east of Tokyo by train. Since our ryokan in Narita City was only a ten minute train ride from the airport, and we didn't get out of Narita Airport until about 5:30PM JST, Narita City was a very convenient place to crash after the 13 & 1/2 hour airplane ride!

Here is our balcony room overlooking a beautiful Japanese garden and pool. Notice the paneled doors separating it from the main part of our room -- these panel doors are a standard feature of Japanese rooms
