Matty's School of English, started by Mitsuo in 1971, is where Jane worked from 1983 to 1985. Unlike the normal Japanese schools, which stress reading and writing, Matty's emphasizes speaking and listening; thus, Matty's designs their programs to supplement the regular school system, not replace it.
Matty's encourages its teachers to live with home-stay families, so that the teachers can get a taste of Japanese families, homes, food, and culture. Jane certainly treasures the time she had with each of her home-stay families.
The sign in this picture is outside the more recent of the two office buildings that Matty's owns; the original building (which is where Jane worked) is a short distance from this one.
